A focal point for investors, new residents, and tourists alike, Estepona ranks as one of the most vibrant spots on the Costa del Sol. As such, the resort attracts plenty of new projects and development and already has big plans for next year. In this article, we round up the main things to expect new in Estepona in 2023.

    New cultural centre

We think culture will be the absolute highlight next year in Estepona when the Mirador del Carmen centre is set to open. Its prime location, right on the western end of the seafront promenade, and cultural program will place the town as one of the top centres for the arts on the Costa del Sol.

The emblematic building, designed by architect Salvador Moreno Peralta, will house a 15-storey library, a music school, and an exhibition centre. The first art on display will include 40 works on loan from the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, plus a selection from the Museo Carmen Thyssen in Malaga.

Views from the building will, of course, be exceptional, with panoramic vistas of the Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar guaranteed. In late 2022, the work is around 65% complete, and the centre is expected to open in December 2023.

    Completed upgrades to the seafront

2023 should be the year when the extensive works on the seafront promenade at the western end of Estepona see completion. They include upgrades to the Avenida de Andalucia and the Balcony to the Mediterranean. This wide-open pedestrian space will connect central Estepona with the port along the seafront and include the Mirador del Carmen cultural centre.

    New hotels in Estepona

Home to some of the Costa del Sol’s top luxury hotels, Estepona will see its share of accommodation newbies next year. They include:

    METT Hotel and Beach Resort

Refurbishment and upgrading work is underway at this 5-star establishment in the El Saladillo Beach area of Estepona. The hotel will house 249 rooms and suites, as well as restaurants and fitness amenities. The opening is expected in mid-2023, when this hotel will join the other top accommodation options in Estepona, such as Hotel Ikos Andalusia and the Kempinski Hotel Bahia.

    Silken Maravilla Palace

With an enviable location in the lovely Plaza de la Flores and just moments away from the seafront promenade, this new four-star hotel is set to become a benchmark for hotels in central Estepona. The 49 rooms come with a craft beer brewery in the basement and the remains of Spain’s best-preserved medieval tannery. The opening is expected sometime next year.

New shopping malls in Estepona in 2023

Estepona also stands to get two new shopping and leisure centres next year.

    Estepona Park

This shopping mall is located next to the Auditorium on Avenida Juan Carlos I and includes 6,000 square metres of commercial space. Brands showcased in the centre include Kiwoko, Sprinter, Primaprix, and Alta Fit.

    Laguna Beach

This commercial centre isn’t new, but it will get a complete facelift in spring 2023 after a fire razed it to the ground in 2020. The entire complex is currently being rebuilt and, when finished, will house 13,000 square metres for shopping and leisure facilities plus 1,200 square metres of the beach area.
